With its 24-hour casino gambling, legalized prostitution and drive-through wedding chapels, Nevada seems anything but conventional. When it comes to voting in presidential elections, it’s as mainstream as it gets.
Nevada hasn’t made much of a difference in selecting the nominee for president or on national politics in general. State officials are hoping that Saturday’s Republican caucuses change that.
Despite its renegade image, some analysts think Nevada is more representative of the U.S. than other early voting states because of its diverse population. While two-thirds of its population is white, 26.5 percent is Hispanic, 8.1 percent is black and 7.2 percent is Asian. The state does have a large Mormon population, which is expected to help Mitt Romney, a member of the church.

Faced with poor turnout and high costs for its presidential primary in 1996, Nevada moved to a caucus system with voting in March. Candidates began paying more attention in 2000 after the state became a battleground and a major source of campaign contributions, particularly from Las Vegas casino moguls such as Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson.

Good for Vegas: Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, have given the Gingrich campaign $10 million. (Technically, Adelson gave the money to one of Newt’s PACs, but still …) So, if Gingrich gets elected, he’ll probably think twice before signing any anti-gaming legislation. (Sorry kids, but that’s how politics works.) And at the federal level, what’s good for Adelson is good for Wynn, Kerkorian and the rest of us.
Bad for Vegas: Newt’s not a fan of welfare. Regardless of how you feel about wealth distribution, you can’t deny that a lot of Las Vegans benefit from it, especially in our current economic climate. (Have you seen our unemployment numbers?) Yes, “putting people back to work” is a noble goal, but it’s also a political euphemism for “cutting off welfare checks.”

Good for Vegas: If Las Vegas were to ever decriminalize prostitution, marijuana possession or currently illegal forms of wagering, and if Ron Paul were president, we wouldn’t have to worry about the federal government flying in and ruining our fun. We’re a libertarian city at heart, and Ron Paul’s a libertarian guy.

Mitt Romney won’t get a free ride in Nevada, either, though as the race shifts to the Nevada caucuses Saturday, he’s a safe bet. He won here handily in 2008 with 51 percent and since then has spent more time in Nevada than all rivals combined, stumping for the governor and others along the way.
“Our team’s been focused for months. We’ve really never lost sight of the prize,” said Romney’s Nevada strategist, Ryan Erwin.
But U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas — a distant second here in 2008 — has a strong ground game, too. And he’s sure to find traction in Nevada’s leave-me-be culture of legal prostitution and quickie divorces.
