In 2007, a firefighter raked in more than $600,000 through all sorts of creative and flexible goodies that have been added to the contract over the years.
Firefighters deserve to be paid well for the work they do and the risks they take — those who get sick or injured deserve even more. But local officials say it’s simply out of control.
It’s amazing McCarran Airport isn’t a heap of smoldering rubble, judging by the amount of overtime paid to its firefighter staff, including Engineer Kelly McNamara. He earned a $98,000 in overtime last year and a total salary of over $232,000.
Airport Fire Captain Martin Vohwinkel took in $63,000 in overtime, which explains how he could afford to live in the gated community. Vohwinkel was arrested this week for soliciting sex with a minor.
