Others say pot pubs and openly-operating brothels might keep away the mainstream visitor base local hotel-casino operators and tourism officials have cultivated, added Bill Thompson, a University of Nevada professor who specializes in gaming and tourism issues.
“I think you should really consider what kind of people this would draw,” Thompson told the paper. “We don’t need any more sleazy people.” Thompson also cited a study he and another man did that found drinkers had the most problems with compulsive gambling, while drug users were less likely to be problem gamblers. (I guess that would mean lower revenue for casinos if drugs were legal?)
Sin City’s colorful, outspoken mayor, Oscar Goodman, discussed turning East Fremont Street downtown into a “little Amsterdam” some years back and called prostitution a potential “redevelopment tool.” Legal brothels would generate revenue and be safer for practitioners of the sex trade, he said.

SIN CITY POLL
LAS VEGAS (AP) – There’s enough sin in Sin City already. That seems to be the sentiment of most of those responding in a new poll about Las Vegas. An overwhelming 79 percent said they don’t want Dutch-style hash and pot bars in Vegas. Another 19 percent like the idea of legalized weed. Sixty-four percent oppose legal brothels in Las Vegas. But 30 percent of those asked say legalizing prostitution would be a way to increase tourism. Brothels are now legal in some rural Nevada counties. The poll was conducted for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and KLAS-TV.

Nick Bogdanovich, sportsbook director at Mandalay Bay and obviously star-struck in the presence of a mega-celebrity, accepted the wager on credit, meaning Barkley neither had to put up the cash in advance nor sign a marker to make the bet.
That’s a big no-no in the legal sportsbook biz, and to make matter worse, Barkley’s bet won, as the underdog Patriots beat the Rams 20-17.
The next day Bogdanovich was fired.
The controversial and humiliating incident was huge news in the gambling world and even made the mainstream media–it was discussed on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interuption” and David Letterman on his show asked Barkley about it.
Even the supermarket tabloid Star magazine did an item.
Eight years later, after bouncing around at a variety of jobs, including strip club operator, the beleaguered Bogdanovich is now a tout–a sports handicapper (some call them scamdicappers).

Las Vegas Hustler Club Opens Thursday
Aug 30th, 2010 01:28 PM
LAS VEGAS—Larry Flynt isn’t an understated man. The Hustler founder opens up the four-story, 70,000-square-foot Hustler Club in Las Vegas on Thursday with partner Jason “Cash” Mohney.
The luxurious club features five bars and is topped by a year-round oasis and a wedding chapel on the roof.
The club soft-opened on Aug. 26, and holds its Grand Opening Sept. 10-11. From Sept. 2-5 the club is throwing a series of parties to celebrate the opening.
“This gentleman’s club is more than another strip club,” Jason Mohney said. “It is designed to be an ultra erotic event center designed to serve corporations that want to add a little spice to their events and want to avoid the high cost of other venues.”

An 8 News Now/Las Vegas Review-Journal poll has found little support for legalizing Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes or prostitution. Only 30% of respondents supported retail marijuana sales and only 19% supported legalizing prostitution.
…
The poll was conducted last week by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research. The group surveyed 405 registered Clark County voters and had a margin of error of +/- 5%. Setting up cannabis cafes would work against efforts to craft a more mainstream, family-friendly image for the long-time gambling destination, Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker told the Review-Journal. And hookers and hash bars may be too much even for the famously live-and-let-live city, he added. Things are maybe a little desperate in Clark County these days, but I don’t think they’re quite that desperate yet,” Coker said. “These kinds of issues push the limits of even a libertarian community. You could go to some very liberal communities, and the idea of legalizing prostitution would probably raise a few eyebrows.” The Marijuana Policy Project had spent nearly a decade attempting …

Hilton, who was busted Friday after she and a friend were stopped for a traffic citation, first claimed the coke in her purse wasn’t hers because not only would she never, ever do such a thing, but it’s not even her purse. When everyone laughed at this standard COPS crackhead response, she then tried to argue that the search was unwarranted. Oh, silly girl! Don’t you know that search-and-seizure rights were revoked after September 11th and never properly reinstated? What, nobody knows that? But we all know about Tiger Woods, right? So the news is focusing on the right stuff.
The Vegas police are saying they had every right to search the car because it smelled like pot, and that hippie herb might be legal in California, but the only thing legal in Vegas is prostitution, gambling, and virtually everything else. No dangerous marijuana!

Ilan Bunimovitz, 2 Large Investors Seek Injunction Against Private
Thu, Aug 12 2010 03:15pm PDT
LAS VEGAS — Former Private Media Group CEO Ilan Bunimovitz and two large investors have filed suit against the adult entertainment giant, claiming it is mismanaged by its present chairman and board of directors.
The suit, filed at Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, seeks an injunction over much of Barcelona-based Private’s business activities and seeks the appointment of a receiver.
A hearing over the matter begins Friday morning in Las Vegas.
Joining Bunimovitz as plaintiffs are stockholders Consipio Holding BV, which purports to hold 5.6 million shares of the company, and Tisbury Services Ltd., which owns 2.8 million shares. Bunimovitz owns 1.9 million shares.
The proposed injunction would enjoin Private from issuing any additional shares of stock, incurring any additional debt, disposing of any business assets outside of the ordinary course of business and making any loans to any officer, affiliate or director of the company.
